"We need to do it!" Hugo said as soon as Grandma was out of sight. "People will go crazy for magic treats."

Billy shook his head. "Let’s wait on it. It might be unethical, yeah Rosie? Giving people all sorts of weird magic drugs. Also who knows if it’ll mess up the flavor."

"Yeah," I said absently. I was still stuck on Grandma Witch—of all people—making enchanted muffins. I’d always thought of her as a person who was a bit snobby about how magic should be used. But maybe I’d misjudged her—as she’d suggested to me earlier. Maybe I’d been projecting my own thoughts onto her or something.

Luckily Asmo interrupted us before I had to make a decision. "Rosie. Dinner?"

"Yeah," I said. "But can we go for a long walk first? I need to clear my head. Pumpkins, let’s reconvene tomorrow to discuss all this. We don’t have to make any decisions right now."

"Agreed," Billy said, throwing the magic muffins a disdainful look. "I’ll sleep on it before I decide that I hate them."

"Billy, be nice," Hugo said warningly, but I was already out the door. The two pumpkins could bicker it out. I needed to get outside into the crisp fall air.

Asmo followed me out and we walked down to the river in comfortable silence. The sun was setting over the water, lighting the sky up in brilliant shades of purple, pink and orange, and we took a moment to drink in the view.

"It’s a nice world up here," he said after a moment. "I’m glad you summoned me up."

"Yeah?" I said.

"Yeah. More interesting than my realm. Demons."

"What about them?"

He sighed. "You’d think a group of us together would be really exciting. But mostly we just argue. Up here at least there’s more variety. You never know what’s going to happen next."

True. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes bad.

A large tomcat crept toward us through the reeds, stalking some prey we couldn’t see. He froze when he saw us, yellow eyes glaring.

"Hi Roger," Asmo said casually.

The cat relaxed instantly and trotted out onto the path, tail twitching, and presented his head to me to be petted.

"It’s the cat I was talking to earlier," Asmo explained. "The one who ran away. I told him to go back home, but it looks like they’re giving him a little more freedom than they did before. Good thing, too. He was bored."

He nodded at Roger, and the cat inclined his head in response before vanishing into the undergrowth. We continued walking slowly along the river, still in silence.

"That was a good thing you did," I said. "With the cat."

He shrugged. "All in a day’s work."

The air was fresh and crisp, and the walk was pleasant as we made our way up the river. It felt good to stretch my legs after spending all day in the shop.

"What do you think about the magic treats?" I said. "Good idea or bad?"

"Good," Asmo said. "Make normal treats too, though, in case people don’t want a pick me up.
